Harder to find if you're overweight?

When we got our doppler the other day we were able to find one of the two heart beats (high 180's) after some searching. I am 10 weeks 4 days and last night we didn't have any luck.
Two questions: Is it more difficult for an overweight woman to find the heart beat/s especially at this stage? Also, for twins at this stage, would we have to move the probe very far away from the first heart beat to find the second?
Thanks very much for your advice, I'm sure that we just need to be a little more patient and move a little slower.

Hello

That is a great question. I invite other mothers of twins who have used a doppler to respone to this question as well. Its always helpful to have advise from those who have been there.

Finding twins can sometimes be a bit tricky in the early weeks. Usually baby A's heartbeat will be at a different rate than baby B's heartbeat (one at 160 and one at 180 for example) but sometimes they can be quite similar (depending on activity level at the time etc). You shouldnt have to go far to find both heartbeats, they will usually be pretty close to one another in the early weeks.

Later on in pregnancy as your uterus and the babies grow, the heartbeat can be found on either side or one on top and the other near the bottom. Also, later on in pregnancy (second trimester and on), the same heartbeat may be found in different locations. To distinguish between Baby A and Baby B will be a matter or looking to see that there is a difference in heartrate. This is why digital display dopplers are best for twin pregnancies. No need to count each heartbeat to find out which baby you are hearing.

As far as whether or not extra weight can make it difficult to hear the baby? I am really not sure. The 3 Mhz probe has a wider range so its great for picking up fetal heartbeats in the first trimester and througout the rest of pregnancy, however, if there is alot of extra belly to go through, it can make it a bit more tricky in the early weeks. Once the baby moves up from behind the pelvic bone (between 10-12 weeks)finding the heartbeat usually becomes much easier. I have someone working on this question right now.

Its always a bit more tricky to find baby in the early weeks, but every day that goes by and the more practice you get you will find that it is easier to locate and manuever. My best advice is always: Full Bladder, Go VERY slow and use enough gel.

Was it a Tummy Tickles doppler that you ordered? Let us know how you make out, I know your questions and responses will help alot of other curious mommy's to be.

Thanks very much for your response. I'm renting a Tummy Tickles doppler and I'm very thankful for it. It turns out that I just needed to be a little more patient. I have little or no problems finding both heart rates lately (11 weeks 4 days now) and as you mentioned, at this point they are not very far away from each other in distance. Their rates are also a bit different as you mentioned (low-mid 170's and low-mid 180's). I got a bit worried the day before my first Dr. appointment, as I wasn't able to get a good reading on one of them. It turns out that the baby was hiding behind a large artery, as the same thing happened to the Dr. when she checked as well. By the way, she was very impressed with your doppler and wanted to switch with me! As well, she thought that it was a great idea to rent dopplers for all mother's peace of mind! Thanks again.

It takes a bit of getting used to but once find the heartbeat a few times, its like riding a bike. Thats a great idea bringing your doppler into the doctors office, they use them all the time so they can offer tips and tools of the trade. I'm glad she liked it so much, thanks for posting that, it makes us look good!

Congratulations on your twins!! You must be so excited!

I am 8 weeks 6 days according to my ovulation cycle (fertility friend) and 8 weeks 3 days according to early ultrasound done 2 weeks ago. I am very overweight and I got my doppler today. The first time I tried for ten minutes and got nothing. I deceided I would wait a few days before trying again but just couldn't wait. So an hour later I decided to try again and after 2 min I found the heart beat. Like galloping horses a whoping 176. I listened for like 3 minutes. AMAZING.

Not all dopplers are able to pick up the heartbeat as early as the Tummy Tickles dopplers (as early as 8-10 weeks). In fact, the standard for most available dopplers is usually after about 12 weeks. The Tummy Tickles doppler is very sensitive and is able to pick up a heartbeat earlier than most devices available on the market.

So please do not worry, I would assume that your doctor likely has a different model of doppler only able to pick up the heartbeat closer to 12 weeks and not much earlier. Not hearing the heartbeat is NOT a sign that anything is wrong. Congratulations on your pregnancy! Tell your doctor he/she needs to invest in a Tummy Tickles doppler! lol.
