I am hearing two heartbeats in different places? If they are really far apart (one on one side of my belly and one on the other) does that mean I have twins?

Hello Kelly! No not necessarily. Its pretty common to hear the heartbeat in more than one place. There may be a slightly higher chance of twins if both heartrates were at different bpm. That is, one is at say 120 while the other is at 150. That may signal more than one heart beating! The only way to really tell if you are carrying twins though is via ultrasound! ---------- Michelle, Site Administrator

I'm just wondering about fluctuations in the heart beat, is this normal? Over the weekend my twins (14 weeks) had heart rates of 175 and 165. Today I'm getting readings of approx. 165 and 155. The bpm difference between the two has not changed, but I'm concerned about the drop. Is this normal? My first OB appt is not for another week yet. Thanks.

Hello Laurie Fluctuations in a fetal heartbeat are normal. Just like our heartrates (mine ranges between 60-90 depending on level of activity) a fetal heartrate will go up or down depending on level of activity (higher when kicking and moving around and lower when asleep). Anywhere between 120-180 beats per minute is considered to be a normal fetal heartrate. ---------- Michelle, Site Administrator

Great question! Fetal dopplers have been safely used for over 40 years and there have been no known complications involving mother or fetus. To date there are no set guidlines for the use of fetal dopplers by pregnant women. ---------- Michelle, Site Administrator

Hi, Hope someone can help. I just purchased a fetal heart monitor. I am 13.5 week pregnant and have had two ultrasounds, all normal, heartbeat was on average 161. My doctor used a doppler a couple weeks ago and found the heartbeat right away, it was 159. When I used my doppler it shows a heartbeat of 55 then jumps suddenly to 225 then jumps suddenly to 130 all while I am holding the wand still. The LCD screen has a beating heart that is sometimes solid and sometimes it is just the outline of the heart. What am I doing wrong? The monitor is the Hi Bebe 200 doppler. Thank for listening and helping, Mary

I am 11.5 weeks since my last menstrual period (that would make me about 9.5 wks?) Rented a doppler and can't find a thing. Am I jumping the gun a bit?

Hello, No, neither of you are doing anything wrong. The Hi Bebe fetal doppler is a bit less sensitive than the one your doctor probably has (and the Tummy Tickles ones that we rent here). So many factors play into how early a baby's heartbeat can be heard in the womb (shape of uterus, size of pelvic cavity, size of mother, gestational age of baby - correct dates, and the list goes on). With a Tummy Tickles doppler you can usually hear the heartbeat between 8-10 weeks, but I have had some people report that they could not hear the heartbeat until after 10 weeks. It really depends on so many things. One thing I must stress to anyone having difficulty hearing the heartbeat. There is a very large range of NORMAL. That is, just because your friend who is also pregnant found the heartbeat with the same doppler that you are using at 8 weeks, does not mean that you will. It also does not mean there is anything wrong with your pregnancy. Everyone is shaped different and every pregnancy is different. Its hard to pin down how early any one woman will be able to hear her baby's heartbeat. -------- Michelle, Site Administrator

I just got my doppler yesterday. I am 10 weeks. It took me a very, very long time to find the heartbeat but I eventually did for a minute. I have tried about 6 times since then and I can't find it again. I am actually quite sore from pressing down on the doppler. Can you harm the baby at all by pressing too hard? I am paranoid now that I can't find the heartbeat again. Thanks.

Hello You dont want to make yourself sore for pressing too hard. However, baby is well protected in your uterus. And do not worry, if you found it once, you will find it again. Be sure to check out our 'Tips for Doppler Use' page for helpful tips on how to find baby's heartbeat. Baby's like to hide in the early weeks. As your baby and uterus grow out of your pelvis the heartbeat becomes easier to find. ---------- Michelle, Site Administrator

Two heartbeats?

Hello, I purchased a doppler a couple of weeks ago and am so glad I did, however in the past week I have started hearing what seems to be two fetal heartbeats. I hear the placental whooshing sound at around 90-95, then I can pick up one clippity-clopping along at around 145 and another not quite so loud that registers around 125. I've already had an ultrasound at 8 wks 3 days and it seems pretty clear in those pictures that there is just one baby in there - I have another scheduled soon. Could there possibly be another baby that didn't show up the first time? If not what am I hearing? Thanks!

How do you best suggest to monitor BPM of twins? I am afraid that I wont be able to determine the difference.

Hello Two Heartbeats As far as trying to determine whether or not you are pregnant with twins, I would rely best on the ultrasound rather than your doppler. I would definitely bring it up with your doctor at your next appt and see if he/she comes up with the same thing. Let us know how you make out, I am interested to hear if they really did miss a twin pregnancy with an ultrasound at 8 weeks. Hello Anonymous For twin monitoring you can usually tell the twins apart due to the fact that they often/usually have different heartrates. A baby's heartrate can be anywhere from 120-180 so usually you will see Baby A beating at say 130 and Baby B will be at 150 or something like that. ---------- Michelle, Site Administrator

Hey I am 13 1/2 weeks. I rented a baby beat doppler and i hear two heartbeats. One is in the high 140 and the other is in the high 160. i had an ultra sound at 7 wks and only one baby was shown. I recently lost triplets( three little boys) and i feel some of the same systems as with them like movemeny not gas. So do you think twins? Maybe?

I am sorry to hear of the loss of your little boys. That must have been difficult. I am happy to hear of your recent pregnancy though. Congratulations! Hmmmm, its hard to say. I would trust an ultrasound over a doppler really but I have heard of multiples being missed on a ultrasound before. Perhaps you should bring your doppler in and show your doctor. Ask her/him what they think. Keep me posted! I am eager to hear the results. ---------- Michelle, Site Administrator

I am almost 11 weeks along with my second baby. I just received my doppler today and was able to find my baby within a few mins, the reading was about 175 bpm. I always remember my daughter being in the 170s and never lower, but as I looked more into this website it says that 120-160 is normal??? Should I be concerned? At the 7 week ultrasound its heartbeat was 153. I have dopplered twice today and both times its been between 170-176......let me know! Thanks. Rachel

A normal fetal heartbeat can be anywhere from 120-180. Usually during the first trimester the baby's heartbeat will be a bit higher. It tends to come down a bit as time goes on. ---------- Michelle, Site Administrator

Hello Yes that could be the baby's heartbeat. The Hi Bebe doppler is less sensitive than the Tummy Tickles doppler usually picking up heartbeats at around 12 weeks or more. If you have a bit of extra weight it can be a little more difficult to hear the heartbeat until the baby grows up and out of your uterus. Also, fetal activity (they are hard to find when they are active) and the mother's body shape (depth of uterus etc) can play an important role too. Be sure to use lots of gel, go very slowly and turn up the volume. Be patient, using a doppler can be a bit tricky at first. Once you find the heartbeat the first few times though, you'll be a pro. Let me know how you make out! ---------- Michelle, Site Administrator

Hi my doctor used a dopler on me. Although he was pressing so hard I actually got worried that he was hurting the baby. Could this be the case? Is the baby ok? Is it well protected from pressing hard with a doppler? Not sure if I should get one in case i press too hard too.

Hello, pressing too hard should not be a concern for the baby but is probably quite uncomfortable for you. Your baby is well protected in the uterus and in its amniotic sac so little harm should come from palpatating or pressing down on your uterus. Also, there really isnt much need to press too hard so I dont think you will have that problem if you choose to order one for yourself. I hope that helped! ---------- Michelle, Site Administrator

I am a little over 13 wks along and was looking into getting a fetal heartbeat monitor. Thing is I havent even heard the heartbeat at the dr yet, I wont until my appointment on the 25th. I was told since I was bigger before getting pregnant I may have some issues at the dr office and the only way to hear it maybe an ultrasound. I really want one, but dont want to waste the money or me getting stressed if I cant find the heartbeat. I am curious what you all think that have one, is it safe to get one now or just wait it out?

Also could you please enlighten me, is it upto 140 it is a boy and from 140 upwards its a girl? Is this true?

I haven't been able to hear a fetal heartbeat (yet) with my new doppler; however, when I tried to use it, the lcd readout showed a bpm of 120-130. Is the readout accurate even if the heartbeat cannot be heard? If so, what explains the low bpm? I'm at 12+ weeks. Is there something wrong with my baby?

Michelle, 55 is your heartbeat (not the baby's). Move the doppler around more to find the baby's heartbeat (which is much higher than yours).

i am 11 weeks pregnant and just got the hi bebe 200 a couple days ago. when i first used it i was picking up my heart rate and didnt know it. mine is kinda high at about 100. i thought it was the baby's and i was devastated because it is too low. i figured out it was mine by feeling my pulse. then i took the tips on this web site like having a full bladder and looking right behind my own heartbeat and i found it! it is 160. i am so happy and relieved. the tips really worked!!

Depending on your doctor or midwife's doppler, you may or may not be able to hear your baby's heartbeat by 12 weeks. Unfortunately, many doctors and midwives have older models or poor quality dopplers. Without knowing the model I cannot tell you whether or not the unit should be able to pick up a heartbeat at 12 weeks. Not all dopplers are created equally. Please try not to worry though, not hearing a fetal heartbeat is NOT a sign that something is wrong with your pregnancy. Many factors, including uterus shape and size, doppler quality, acurate pregnancy date etc. Check back in and let us know how you are doing! Congratulations on your pregnancy! ---------- Michelle, Site Administrator

I am 19 weeks prego and just got my doppler. On the right side of my belly I get a BPM in the 150s then picked up one in the 130s on the left side. I can go back and forth between the two. Is it maybe the same heart beat just further away when I get the 130s? Cant be twins right? I dont get sono till 18th.

Hi, I am 14 weeks pregnant and VERY overweight. I have a fetal doppler that i have been trying to use since week 12 with no joy. i realise it may not be possible because of my size at the moment but i just want to check if I am actually looking in the right place. Where abouts should I be scanning at this stage of my pregnancy? Is it right in the middle of my body above the public hair? Or more into my belly now? Do I go to the right or left? When i had the ultrasound at 12 weeks she scanned a little over to the right so not sure if to be in the middle or over a bit? Thanks in advance

Hi there - i am 11 weeks and was able to hear the heartbeat two days ago (around 144 bpm). But then I couldn't find it again the next day, even though I looked in the same area. Is this cause for concern, or does the baby move around some? Thanks for your input.

Hi. Yes I just got mine a day ago. I noticed the baby moved all over.- to the left and then to right side. It took me a while to find the heartbeat. When we did it was music to our ears!

I am 19 weeks pregnant and sometimes when I use my doppler (which I have been using since 9 weeks so I've grown very used to what I'm hearing and listening for) I find the baby's HB and it usually in the 140s or 150s.......but sometimes while I'm listening to it it seems to decelerate to 120s or 130s and then go back to normal. The u/s at 18 wks didn't show any heart abnormalities and his hb was 154 then. It has all 4 chambers and everything. Can this be normal?
